Glenn Maxwell Sets Five New World Records Against Afghanistan

Glenn Maxwell hit an undefeated double century in an astonishing ODI performance against Afghanistan at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium during the ICC World Cup 2023.

Afghanistan’s bowlers, defending a target of 292, had Australia reeling at 91/7, on the verge of a massive shock. Maxwell, on the other hand, had other ideas, flipping the game on its head.

Maxwell’s extraordinary innings began with a stroke of luck, when Mujeeb Ur Rahman dropped a critical catch. From there, he unleashed a merciless attack, turning his original 33 runs into an incredible 207. Maxwell smashed an incredible 21 fours and 10 sixes, leading Australia to an unparalleled triumph.

Maxwell’s determination remained unbroken despite cramps and a back spasm. He battled through the agony, trudging for singles in the late innings. His excellent strokeplay left little opportunity for a second chance, firmly establishing his authority.

Because of the ‘Glenn Maxwell’ program, it was a record-breaking night. Here are five of the most notable records broken by the Australian batsman on his way to an undefeated 201.

Highest ODI Score While Batting At No. 6 Or Below

Maxwell batted at No. 6 when Australia was 49/4 inside the powerplay. His 201* is presently the greatest individual score by any hitter batting at No. 6 or below in ODI cricket.

Another famous innings, Kapil Dev’s 175-run knock against Zimbabwe in the 1983 World Cup, is currently second on the list.

Maxwell’s 201* is also the highest individual score in List-A cricket while batting at No. 6. In 2019, David Wiese batted at No. 6 for Sussex and made 171 runs.

Highest Partnership For 7th Wicket Or Lower In ODI History

Against Afghanistan, Maxwell and Cummins scored 202* runs for the ninth wicket. While Maxwell handled the most of the scoring, Cummins’ contribution was equally significant.

Their 202*-run partnership is currently the most in one-day internationals for any seventh-wicket or lower partnership. The pair surpassed Jos Buttler and Adil Rashid’s 177-run partnership against New Zealand in Birmingham in 2015.

Highest ODI Score For Australia

Australia now had their first double century after 994 ODIs. Over the years, the record five-time World Cup champions have consistently developed outstanding batting talent.

However, Maxwell’s 201* is currently the greatest individual score for the Australian team in ODI cricket. Shane Watson set the previous record in 2011 when he struck 185* against Bangladesh at Mirpur.

First ODI Double Century By A Non-Opener

Prior to the Australia vs. Afghanistan match, there had been 10 ODI individual double centuries, but none had come from a non-opening batter.

The list was stacked with opening batsmen, ranging from Sachin Tendulkar (200* versus SA) to Shubman Gill (208 vs NZ).

Maxwell is also the first non-opener to score a double century in an ODI innings. As previously stated, he batted at No. 6.

First ODI Double Century While Chasing

Another thing that the prior double hundreds had in common was that they all occurred while batting first. Batting first gives a batsman more freedom to hit. However, with the scoreboard pressure on, it is usually difficult to put up big runs while batting second.

Maxwell displayed steely nerves against Afghanistan, bringing his team home when chasing 292 in Mumbai. His 201* is the first double ton in One-Day International history while chasing.
