Meta is Planning to Build a $10 Billion Subsea Cable around the World, a report says.

Meta’s New $10 Billion Undersea Cable Will Connect the World

Meta, the owner of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, and the 2nd major global internet usage is planning the biggest infrastructure investment. Report says, controlling 10% of fixed and 22% of mobile internet traffic, Meta is deciding on the latest, privately held subsea cable that will span the world.

The TechCrunch report says this project, crossing over 40,000 kilometers, could cost Meta up to $10 billion. This step is a significant move for the company, as Meta will be the only owner and operator of this subsea cable nationwide.

The publication also says, “The Company is expected to share more information in early 2025”.

The cable wouldn’t be completely operational for a few years. According to Ranulf Scarborough, an analyst for the undersea cable sector, while talking with TechCrunch, he said that “cable ships are expensive at the minute and booked out several years ahead.”

The underwater line would provide Meta with a dedicated path for transmitting and receiving data globally, should the idea materialize. It turns out that Meta’s underwater cable might run from the US east coast to India vs. South Africa before returning to the US west coast via Australia.

In case you didn’t know, Meta has already made investments in underwater communication cables. According to reports, the corporation already has a portion of 16 networks, including the recently launched 2Africa cable.
