SpaceX Mission to Rescue Two Stranded Astronauts
SpaceX docks at ISS to rescue stranded astronauts
SpaceX has announced a mission to bring back two astronauts stranded on the International Space Station (ISS) since June.
On September 28, the Dragon capsule lifted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, carrying supplies and two empty seats to rescue astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams.
NASA shared a post on X. NASA’s two astronauts, Nick Hague and Roscosmos cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov, boarded the ISS shortly after the Dragon capsule docked at the station at 2130 GMT.
The two stranded astronauts arrived at the station on Boeing’s new Starliner capsule for an eight-day mission in June, but due to a fault discovered during the flight, both were forced to stay there.
It was actually capsule’s first test flight with astronauts on board and Boeing’s first attempt to take astronauts to the ISS.
A number of problems flight faced, including leaks of helium, which is used in its propulsion system, and other issues with several of its thrusters.
Now the expected return to Earth is most probably in February.
The capsule’s launch had initially been decided to take off on Thursday but was postponed due to Hurricane Helene.
The inside footage of the ISS showed Hague and Gorbunov smiling and posing for photos along with the crew after their arrival.
Hague and Gorbunov will join the space station’s crew before taking Wilmore and Williams back to Earth.
The Dragon capsule is expected to dock with the ISS on Sunday around 21:30 GMT.
