Following a further tightening of social media restrictions, the demand for virtual private networks, or VPNs, has more than tripled nationwide.
According to Top10VPN, an independent website that reviews VPN services, in comparison to the daily average of the previous 28 days, the demand for VPN services in Pakistan increased by 102% on November 25; further on November 26, this VPN demand escalated, reaching 213% above the baseline.
Reports that authorities were restricting WhatsApp media sharing ahead of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) protest marches coincided with the surge.
Downdetector.com, a service that detects when there is a disruption on social platforms or websites, revealed that Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp, and other platforms are experiencing disturbances in Pakistan.
Since there is now no official explanation for why access is blocked, citizens have voiced their frustration over the disruptions. Social media sites function better when accessed after a VPN has been activated.
Social media platforms were not mentioned, but the government had stated that it intended to interfere with internet connections in places where security was a problem.
Slow Internet is another issue users are dealing with as they use VPNs to access social media sites.
