Why AI Features Will Only Be Available on the iPhone 15 Pro Max

At the WWDC 2024 event, Apple recently unveiled Apple Intelligence, their most recent AI advancement. These state-of-the-art features combine artificial intelligence and sophisticated machine learning to improve the user experience. But these improvements are limited to the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max. These AI features won’t be available for Apple’s more cheap iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models in their most recent line-up. Hardware constraints and performance considerations are the main drivers of this choice.

The A17 Pro Chip's Function

The lack of the A17 Pro chip is one of the main reasons Apple Intelligence will not be available for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. The A16 Bionic chip powers the regular iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 plus, in contrast to the Pro models, which also feature this sophisticated chipset. A neural processing unit (NPU) built especially for an AI task is a feature of the A17 Pro CPU. The A16 Bionic chip lacks the ability to handle sophisticated AI and machine learning procedures, which is much improved by the NPU that Apple launched in 2017.

The variation in RAM between the Pro and non-Pro variants is another important consideration. With 8GB of RAM, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max has more than enough memory to handle the complex computational requirements of AI features. On the other hand, the RAM capacity of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus is limited to 6 GB. Because of this difference in memory capacity, the non-Pro versions lack the power needed to utilise Apple Intelligence features.

Efficiency and Performance:

Another important factor is the A17 Pro chip’s performance capabilities. The A17 Pro processor can perform intensive AI tasks that the A16 Bionic chip cannot because of its NPU rating of 35 TOPS (trillions of operations per second). For real-time AI applications and machine learning procedures, this high performance is necessary to guarantee that the features function properly and effectively. Due to their comparatively weaker hardware, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus would find it difficult to achieve the same degree of performance.

Privacy and Security:

Apple has always placed a high priority on security and privacy, and its AI features reflect this attitude. The on-device operation of Apple Intelligence reduces the amount of data that needs to be transferred to external servers. To handle AI operations within the device securely and effectively, a strong hardware configuration is needed. This is possible because the Pro versions have more RAM and an advanced NPU, while the non-Pro devices don’t have the hardware to maintain the same degree of efficiency and security.

Hardware limitations are the main cause of Apple Intelligence’s omission from the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.
The enhanced RAM in the Pro models and the sophisticated NPU of the A17 Pro chip supply the power and efficiency required to implement these AI functions. With its Pro models, Apple not only pushes the boundaries of technology but also emphasises the performance and security requirements of incorporating powerful AI capabilities. This means that owners of the regular iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will not be able to use the newest AI features, but they will still be able to use a sturdy and dependable device.
